The Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2007 has been awarded to Gerhard Ertl (b. 1936,
Fritz-Haber-Institut der Max-Planck-Gesellschaft, Berlin, Germany) for his
studies of chemical processes on solid surfaces. Since the 1960s, Ertl has
created a methodology for surface chemistry by demonstrating how different
experimental procedures can be used to provide a complete picture of a surface
reaction. Over the years, Ertl published two reviews (read free of charge) of
the topic in Angewandte Chemie, for which he also served as a member of the
editorial board from 1991 to 2000.

Ertl is a member of the Editorial Board of ChemistryâA European Journal and
ChemPhysChem and a co-editor of the eight-volume Handbook of Heterogeneous
Catalysis, to appear in early 2008.
