AB A flow technique is described for the continuous monitoring of chem.
reactions, which consists of circulating the soln. in a reaction vessel
through a 1-mm. sealed KBr cell in a recording ir spectrophotometer. It
is essential that a unique wavelength be found characteristic of the
extent of the reaction and at which Beer's law is obeyed. For reaction
times of 1-2 hrs. (or more), the delay in sensing and recording is
insignificant. The rate const. and order of the reaction can be found
graphically. This has been done for (a) the carbonation of n-propylamine,
(b) the addn. of benzyl alc. to phenyl isocyanate, and © the
polymerization of ethyl acrylate.
