Abstract
Polyamide, polyacrylonitrile, or cellulosic textile materials were given a soft hand by treatment with an aq. prepn. contg. a phosphonium salt. Thus, 13.6 g. (HOCH2)3P was dissolved in HCONMe2 with slight heating, 33.3 g. C18H37Br was added, the mixt. was heated 15 hrs. at 130-40°, and the solvent removed under vacuum to give [C18H37P(CH2OH)3]Br, m. 61-2°. [(C18H37OCH2)P(CH2OH)3]Cl, m. 58-61°, [n-C18H37NHCOCH2P(CH2-OH)]Cl, m. 57-60°, [C18H37P(CH2CH2CN)3]Br, m. 54-9°, [C18H37NHCOCH2P(CH2OH)3]I, m. 40-2°, [C18H37NHCOCH2P(CH2CH2CONH2)3]Cl, and [C18H37NHCOCH2P(CH2CH2CO2Me)3]Cl were similarly prepd. Other phosphonium salts were prepd. from the following compds. (phosphine, halide, m.p. of phosphonium salt given): (HOCH2)3P, a chloroacetic acid n-alkylamide (prepd. from ClCH2CO2Me and a com. mixt. of C16H33NH2, C18H37NH2, and octadecenylamine), 48-51°; (NCCH2CH2)3P, a chloroacetic acid n-alkylamide, -. Other phosphonium salts were prepd. by heating a mixt. of (MeO2CCH2CH2)3P (I) 29.2, HCONMe2 100, and com. C18H37NH2 53.8 g. for 15 hrs. at 140°. The phosphonium base was then treated with either MeI or epichlorohydrin to give a product m. 62-5° or 49-51°, resp. A salt which imparted a good soft hand to polyamide and polyacrylonitrile yarns was prepd. by heating a mixt. of I, HCONMe2, and com. (C18H37)2NH, and adding ClCH2CONH2 to the cooled soln. Viscose rayon yarn had a very good soft handle when treated 30 min. at a goods to liquor ratio of 1:30 in a bath at 45° contg. 0.15-1% (based on the wt. of the yarn) of the phosphonium salts. The salts also showed antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus.
