A new synthesis of cis-[Ru(bipy)2Cl2] is presented starting from [Ru(bipy)py4]2+. Also, a method for obtaining cis-trans mixtures of [Ru(bipy)2Cl2] is described. During conversion of trans[Ru(bipy)2py2]2+ to [Ru(bipy)2Cl2] isomerization is found to occur.
