Layer-structured crystals consisting of thin crystalline layers with a thickness of molecular scale can serve as ideal host matrices for nanocomposites. As an example of the applications of the nanocomposite processing approach using layered matrices, the silicate interlayers of expandable clays were pillared with various kinds of ceramic oxide particles of nanometer and subnanometer scales. The resulting composites are a new type of porous materials, with pore sizes controllable in the micropore to mesopore ranges.
