Abstract
A nanocryst. Li[Li0.12Ni0.32Mn0.56]O2 powder was synthesized by a pyrolysis method using polyacrylate salts as the precursor compds. XRD and TEM results demonstrated that the Li[Li0.12Ni0.32Mn0.56]O2 powder has a layered structure as -NaFeO2 and has an av. particle size of 50-70 nm. The charge-discharge expts. show that the Li[Li0.12Ni0.32Mn0.56]O2 electrode can deliver a reversible capacity of .apprx.140 mA h g-1 cycling at 2.5-4.5 V and can still remain 94% of its initial capacity after 10 cycles, showing a great promise for future applications.

Abstract
Ointment gels for poultices are prepd. by (1) dispersing or dissolving acrylic acid salts (neutralization degree 10-50 mol %) in polyhydric alcs. and (2) blending with aq. soln. of multivalent metal compds. The gels provide excellent percutaneous absorption of drugs, such as salicylic acid esters, without skin irritation. For example, acrylic acid salt (neutralization degree 50 mol %), Al(OH)3 gel, and Me salicylate, were dispersed in glycerin. The above soln. was blended with an aq. soln. contg. tartaric acid and the whole mixt. was applied on a polyester nonwoven fabric and left for 24 h at 40 for curing.

Abstract
Dielec. const. and loss of aq. solns. of tetrabutylammonium polyacrylate [25852-11-3] were measured in the frequency range from 300 Hz to 6 MHz and compared with Na and other salts at various conditions. Two dispersions are obsd. in the low-frequency range (LFD, several hundreds of Hz to several kHz) and in the high-frequency range (HFD, several 10 kHz to MHz), resp., both of which are approx. expressed as the Cole-Cole dispersion formula with Cole parameters .sim.0.3. Large values of the dielec. increment, its nonlinear concn. dependence, and other features suggest that both dispersions are explained by relaxations of 2 different ionic processes. Results for HFD were qual. similar to those reported previously and compared with theories of the Maxwell-Wagner-type effect. LFD may be due to polarization of loosely bound counterions. A model for LFD is presented on the basis of counterion fluctuation.

Abstract
Polyacrylate salts can be fabricated in heated molds by using mixed powders of poly(acrylic acid) and metal oxides. Because of the strong intermol. forces in these salts, they have elastic moduli several times greater than the moduli of conventional plastics. They also have very low coeffs. of expansion and high compression strengths. Composites contg. metallic and inorg. fillers were made and their mech. properties measured.

Abstract
Anomalous small-angle X-ray scattering expts. show that before demixing in sodium polyacrylate/cobalt and sodium polyacrylate/calcium mixts. all the divalent counterions are in the close vicinity of the polyacrylate chain. The present results are consistent with previous UV/VIS spectroscopy, which have shown that all cobalt ions are chem. assocd. with acrylate groups. The chem. assocn. dehydrates the acrylate monomers. However, the hydrophobicity of the complexed monomers is not strong enough to induce a collapse of the polymer chain at small spatial scale before the demixing. Indeed, the scattered intensity (X-ray and neutron scattering) decreases with the scattering vector q as q-x with x 2 for q > 0.1 nm-1 which indicates that the local conformation of the chain is Gaussian.

Abstract
A side-chain liq.-cryst. polyacrylate contg. a salicylaldimine group was synthesized and complexed with copper(II) ions to generate metallomesogenic crosslinking of polymeric chains. The mesomorphic properties of the parent and complexed polymers were studied by optical microscopy, DSC, and x-ray diffraction. In addn., these materials were investigated by dielec. spectroscopy. Dielec. measurements of the parent polymer reveal the presence of 2 sub-glass relaxations ( and ). The a relaxation assocd. with the Tg is masked by a conductive process, but at higher temps. a relaxation is obsd. These relaxation processes were characterized and their activation energies evaluated. The influence of the mesogenic order and metal crosslinking on some relaxation processes was also detd.

Abstract
The interactions of poly(methacrylic acid) (PMA), poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) and a copolymer of acrylamide and acrylic acid (CAMAA) with copper (II) ions in aq. solns. were studied by ESR spectroscopy as a function of the degree of neutralization . A procedure for decompn. of the ESR spectra was developed in order to evaluate the fraction of free copper and bound copper ions. When a loss of the ESR signal intensity is obsd. in the solns. contg. polymer with respect to the one of the ref. copper salt solns. without polymer, this effect is attributed to the formation of a binuclear polymer/copper complex (copper:carboxylates, 2/4), inactive in ESR. The complex visible in ESR is assumed to be mononuclear (copper:carboxylates, 1/2). This indicates that the main PMA/copper complex is binuclear. PAA and copper interactions lead to both bi- and mono-nuclear complexes, but this last species is preponderant at the higher values. In the case of CAMAA of lower charge d. and where the charges are quenched, only a mononuclear complex was found. The consts. of formation of the mono- and bi-nuclear complexes were evaluated by assuming that the system was ruled by a series of equil. laws: copper hydrolysis, polymer ionization and polymer/copper complexation. The peculiar behavior for PAA may be explained by considering that the const. of formation for the binuclear complex decreases when the intramol. monomer concn. is lowered by the chain expansion.

Kinetic study of poly(acrylic acid)-copper(II) complex formation. Nishikawa, Hiroshi; Tsuchida, Eishun. Dep. Polym. Chem., Waseda Univ., Tokyo, Japan. Abstract
The kinetics of poly(acrylic acid)-copper(II) (PAA-Cu) complex formation was studied by a relaxation method. The greater stability of PAA-Cu complex than that of a monomeric analog is due to the increase of forward rate const. (kf(PAA)/kf(GA) = 4) where GA is glutaric acid and decrease of the reverse rate const. (kr(PAA)/kr(GA) = 1/4) in the polymer system. The results are explained in terms of an electrostatic effect of polyelectrolyte and a conformational change of the polymer ligand.
