 Исследователи из Университета Техаса (Даллас) разработали электропроводный материал, который может быть растянут более чем в 13 раз. Такой материал может найти применение в гибких электронных устройствах и искусственных мышцах.
Рэй Бауман (Ray Baughman) и его коллеги получили суперэластичные проводящие волокна, вкладывая в эластичный стирол-этилен-бутилен-стироловый сополимер [styrene-(ethylene-butylene)-styrene (SEBS)] углеродные нанотрубки, ориентированные вдоль жгута резины. Полученные волокна весьма эластичны, и могут быть растянуты на 1320% от своей исходной длины.
Электрическое сопротивление нового материала при растяжении его в 10 раз увеличивается всего на 5%. Первоначальные исследования в области сверхэластичных проводников позволили разработать только такие провода, электропроводность которых не менялась в значительной степени только при пятикратном растяжении. Ключом к успеху новой работы была ранее опубликованная по применению многостенных углеродных нанотрубок, полученных из аэрогеля. Растягивая эластичный полимер на 1400% от его исходной длины для того, чтобы он смог «обернуть» нанотрубки, исследователям удалось создать интернальную иерархическую структуру, которая, в свою очередь, может служить основой для других структур.
При частичном или полном снятии напряжения слои углеродных нанотрубок выгибаются аксиально, а в дальнейшем приложение или снятие напряжения приводят к тому, что в любом состоянии нанотрубки формируют области с близким и дальним порядком, что позволяет сохранять проводимость материала при различной степени деформации. В дальнейшем использование различных типов резины и различных типов углеродных нанотрубок позволяет изменять исходное сопротивление и другие параметры волокон.
В планах исследователей получение более мощных искусственных мускулов за счет уменьшения диаметра центрального резинового жгута и добавления нескольких слоев ориентированных углеродных нанотрубок, отделенных друг от друга тонкими слоями диэлектрика. Также химики хотят инкорпорировать такие многослойные волокна в текстильные или резинотехнические изделия для того, чтобы получить суперрастяжимые изменяющиеся структуры, способные чувствовать наши собственные движения.
